The Design of a Haptic Simulator for Teaching and Assessing Spinal Anaesthesia
نویسندگان
چکیده
Through an interdisciplinary design process we have created a haptic simulator to mimic the physical and sensory environment surrounding the performance of spinal anaesthesia. Our simulator utilises existing haptic toolkits to reproduce tissues and surfaces in a realistic way. It simulates needle insertion with audio and visual (2D/3D) feedback occurring during the actual procedure. The overall simulation system is designed for being an integral part of an existing curriculum and offers excellent potentials in assessing procedural skills in a safe and controlled environment.

Soft Tissue Modeling Using ANFIS for Training Diagnosis of Breast Cancer in Haptic Simulator
Soft tissue modeling for the creation of a haptic simulator for training medical skills has been the focus of many attempts up to now. In soft tissue modeling the most important parameter considered is its being real-time, as well as its accuracy and sensitivity. In this paper, ANFIS approach is used to present a nonlinear model for soft tissue. The required data for training the neuro-fuzzy mo...
متن کاملApplying a Web and Simulation-Based System for Adaptive Competence Assessment of Spinal Anaesthesia
The authors present an approach for implementing a system for the assessment of medical competences using a haptic simulation device. Based on Competence based Knowledge Space Theory (CbKST), information on the learners’ competences is gathered from different sources (test questions, data from the simulator, and supervising experts’ assessments). The envisaged architecture consists of three cor...

Background and Aim: The purpose of this study was to design of dual-purpose treadmill and gait simulator device for veterans and disabled people. This device can be used by both healthy and stroke patients, spinal cord injury, Parkinson's disease, MS and people who have lost their ability to walk for a temporary period. Methods: The device design is such that the protective waistcoat has sensor...
متن کاملCompetence Assessment for Spinal Anaesthesia
The authors describe a new approach towards assessing skills of medical trainees. Based on experiences from previous projects with (i) applying virtual environments for medical training and (ii) competence assessment and personalisation in technology enhanced learning environments, a system for personalised medical training with virtual environments is built. Thus, the practical training of mot...
متن کاملTeaching bovine abdominal anatomy: use of a haptic simulator.
Traditional methods of teaching anatomy to undergraduate medical and veterinary students are being challenged and need to adapt to modern concerns and requirements. There is a move away from the use of cadavers to new technologies as a way of complementing the traditional approaches and addressing resource and ethical problems. Haptic (touch) technology, which allows the student to feel a 3D co...
